Ethiopia
Jimma University was established in December 1999 by the amalgamation of Jimma College of Agriculture and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences founded in 1952 and 1983 respectively. Currently, Jimma University is a leading Higher Learning Institution in Ethiopia by standing first amongst Higher Learning Institutions for the third time in a row, as announced during the 22nd Education and Training Conference held from in October 2012. Jimma university aspires to strengthen its position as leading public University in the country, renowned in Africa, and recognized in the World.
Building highly qualified human power requires advanced level of studies to produce professionals capable of doing research and initiate, organize and execute effective development programs of relevance to the country. Jimma University currently enrolls students in 82 postgraduate programs, most of which are second degrees.
Doctoral education
Jimma University (JU) offers seven doctoral programs: PhD in Horticulture, PhD in Plant Breeding, PhD in Plant Pathology, PhD in Animal Nutrition, PhD in Environmental Health, PhD in Applied Ecology, and PhD in Applied Microbiology. To produce the skilled manpower that Ethiopia needs, JU is focusing on developing additional doctoral programs. Today, in addition to the full time doctoral programs at JU, students have undertaken a PhD study in a Sandwich program with different European Countries, Belgium Universities taking the lion share with a project known as VLIR-IUC. JU students, both full time and Sandwich doctoral programs are committed to contribute both for development and science when conducting research for their dissertations.
