For mutual gain: Euro-African cooperation in higher education
Brussels
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

For decades, Africa has been viewed as the ‘problem child’ of this world. Higher education in Africa was no exception to this rule. It was perceived as under-resourced and, more important, seriously under-achieving. Not that the major challenges have disappeared overnight. But recent years have witnessed important change, at least in part of the vast continent’s higher education systems and institutions. This is one of the many good reasons to take a fresh and unbiased look, and to re-evaluate African higher education. This is exactly what the seminar For mutual gain: Euro-African cooperation in higher education is intended to do.

No. 40 in the ACA European Policy Seminar series, this event is special. It is co-organised by the European University Association (EUA), the European Association for International Education (EAIE) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Together, the four organisations have created a rich and multi-faceted programme, with three main thematic orientations:

•    Recent overall trends and developments in African higher education;
•    Internationalisation in African higher education; and
•    Cooperation in higher education between Africa and Europe.

The seminar features as speakers some of the finest specialist on African higher education and on Euro-Africa collaboration. We are proud to announce presenters from the World Bank, the European Commission, and from universities across Europe. Moreover, we are especially proud that half of the speakers at this seminar are African academics. Thus, you will receive information and analysis from the “original source”.

PLE-PhD project workshop on doctoral programmes and e-supervision
Barcelona
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Since 2011 the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) and the International Association of Universities (IAU) are joining forces in the area of doctoral education, bringing together two projects: , led by IAU and the , led by ACUP. One of the main outcomes of this collaboration is the development of the joint IDEA platform (www.idea-phd.net) on innovative approaches to doctoral education.

The above mentioned projects led to the identification of supervision of doctoral students as one of the key challenges African higher education institutions are facing. In the recently initiated Personal Learning Environment (PLE)-PhD project () financed through the IAU LEADHER programme, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Kenyatta University (KU) and the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) are looking into how digital technologies, more specifically the web 2.0 tools, can respond to this challenge.

In order to present and debate the project outcomes, create a community and network of experts as well as sharing experiences and practices and exploring new avenues for cooperation, UOC, KU, ACUP and IAU are co-organizing this one-day workshop on e-supervision.

The seminar intends to

- Present and discuss the importance and pertinence of e-supervision and the academic challenges and opportunities involved;

- Analyse the use of Personal Learning Environments for Doctoral Students (PLEDS) as new models of effective e-supervision;

- Share concrete experiences and practice in the field of e-supervision: how does it work; what are the basic principles that should guide e-supervision; what are the challenges (advantages and opportunities or difficulties);

- Identify the institutional actors to involve (programme designers, professors, students, administrators);

- Debate challenges and possible solutions to develop successful e-supervision

Combating Challenges of Academic Mobility in Africa 2013
All Day
(8/28//30/2013)

The summit on Combating Challenges of Academic Mobility in Africa 2013 under the theme “Planning Academic mobility to strengthen African higher education and to promote flows of talent and expertise and to attract a qualified labor force” will take place from 28th – 30th August 2013 at Southern Sun Hotel, OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Academic mobility poses serious challenges to the African Education System. Increasing access to quality higher education for students, staff and academics at the same time enabling them to benefit from experience gained in the context of mobility to another country can be pain stacking. Currently, Academic Mobility in Africa suffers from cultural, socio-economical and academic barriers among other major challenges. Ministries and learning institutions responsible for higher education in Africa should promote academic mobility to attract students and staff from other parts of the world and be internationally competitive. Academic Mobility of students and staff is one of the core issues and key stones in building up the African Higher Education arena.

This informative summit will be an important tool in strengthening the region’s development potentials and enhancing the quality of cross-border higher education which is intended to function as a platform from which increased cooperation between countries and institutions in the region can take place.
